No smoke without fire..........................

December 11, 2018

So they told us that you had to hard wire your smoke alarms !

Now they are about to tell us that from February 2019, we can rely upon battery operated alarms so long as they are powered by a sealed-in battery with a 10 year lifespan.

In this time of unprecedented U turns, our Scottish government have performed one of their own in moving away from insisting on the hardwiring of smoke alarms but for what reason? Money! Following the Grenfell Tower fire legislation was brought in to ensure that every dwelling that was rented from a private or social landlord would require to have a smoke alarm. The cost of doing this for local authorities and their social housing stock would have had a dramatic affect on their budgets so the government have back tracked on their previous insistance that smoke alarms had to be hard wired.

Looks to me that once again money talks and safety is potentially being compromised? The beauty of the hard wired smoke alarm was that once it was in then it did not need changed. What we are left with is a 10 year ticking time bomb when landlords forget to get new alarms fitted!

What next another Brexit referendum!
